ABSTRACT

From the foundation of the Republic of Turkey until the 1960s – when the modern institutions of social welfare were inaugurated – the main institutions were Darülaceze (the poor house), Türkiye Kızılay Derneği (The Turkish Red Crescent Society), and Çocuk Esirgeme Kurumu (The Child Protection Agency). The Child Protection Agency was a social assistance institution founded in order to protect children who were left parentless because of the war in 1921 (Himaye-i Etfal Cemiyeti Association for Protection of Children; in 1980 the name of the institution was changed to The Social Services and Child Protection Agency).
