ABSTRACT

Nowadays, there is a consolidated understanding that sustainable development is not possible without sustainable energy for all. Furthermore, Distributed Renewable Energy (DRE) is seen as key to achieve this aim. The LeNSes project (Learning Network for Sustainable energy systems) fits within this framework, as far as it is aimed at developing and disseminating in African and European higher education institutions a new design discipline: System Design for Sustainable Energy for All (SD4SEA), a design approach where the focus is moved from mere product design for sustainable energies to the wider approach of Sustainable Product-Service Systems (S.PSS) design for sustainable energy for all. This chapter presents the Sustainable Energy for All Design Scenario developed within the LeNSes project. This scenario aims to inspire and inform designers to design within a radically new social, economic and technical system, based on the following research hypothesis: S.PSS are a promising model to DRE in low- and middle-income contexts. The findings have also been produced as a tool, in the form of a set of evocative videos.
