ABSTRACT

As with any criminal behavior, the causes of intimate partner sexual coercion are likely complex and multifaceted. This chapter focuses exclusively on the characteristics and motivations of perpetrators of intimate partner sexual violence (IPSV), which, relative to other areas of sexual and domestic violence, have been given little scholarly attention. Camilleri and Quinsey (2009a) reported that only 2% of the psychological literature on sexual coercion focused exclusively on partner sexual coercion. Work on intimate partner sexual violence has not kept up with the increase in research on sexual assault in general, possibly due to perceptions that IPSV is not as problematic as other forms of sexual violence (see Attitudes and Perceptions, this chapter).
