ABSTRACT

My mother was born in 1933. In those days, there were plenty of cinemas in the inner city of Stockholm, the city in which she was born and raised (also the city in which I live, and have spent the better part of my life). Cinema tickets were less expensive compared to the prices of today, and to working-class and lower middle-class families, living in small apartments, the cinema was a cheap form of pastime and entertainment. My grandfather was a keen cinemagoer, more so than my grandmother, and he often took my mother to the cinema, weekdays and weekends alike.
