ABSTRACT

RACE (Research and Development in Advanced Communications Technologies in Europe) was a major European Commission initiative launched in 1987 and aimed at ensuring that the European Communities remained at the forefront of developments in the telecommunications sector and continued to be competitive. It complemented the European strategic programme for research and development in information technology (ESPRIT) and other more specific information technology projects; it was replaced in 1994 by ACTS (Advanced Communications Technology and Services).
