ABSTRACT
Does the motivational theory of altruism commonly used today serve as an effective foundational base for a definition of philanthropy as we know it? I argue that it does not because of its limiting nature. Altruism is one end of a continuum which is anchored by egoism on the other. Both motives come together in the human condition to form a cooperative venture to achieve nearly all ends in society.
