Her comparison with the local church is appropriate, for it highlights donors’ involvement with recipient organizations. Nonprofit organizations are focal points around which upper-class life revolves. Through their philanthropy, wealthy donors come together with one another and sustain a series of organizations that contribute to the social and cultural coherence of upper-class life.
