Philanthropy can be ineffective for many reasons: bad luck or poor judgment, unrealistic faith or lack of hope, excessive generosity or insufficient courage. When philanthropy is ugly and demanding, however, as well as ineffective, usually the primary cause is a failure to respect persons.
