ABSTRACT
These philanthropic practices and institutions are not mundane or simplistic, as some might think. There are often quite thorny questions raised when we take a close look, questions that connect back to many of the complex issues covered in previous sections:
• What are the origins of our accepted philanthropic practices? How are new institutions created and new philanthropic approaches innovated? What are the most telling or notable variations across time and place?
