ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on spectacular and profit-motivated spaces of advanced industrial and postindustrial capitalist countries or enclaves within other societies. The authors investigate the types of retroscapes or spaces, the places in which they are likely to occur, and possible reasons for their existence in each case. For each of the retroscapes, they consider the general character of the societies in which they are likely to occur and provide specific examples that describe the retroscape and the society. They also consider retro-landscapes, it is clear that a retroscape does not have to be a literal construction at all, not a building or props or costumes or lights, but can be assembled within the mind of the consumer, drawing upon social and historical discourse. Unlike the other retroscape forms that they have discussed, retro-landscapes are not typically constructed by marketers or producers, or even co-produced as in ritual reenactments.
