ABSTRACT

THE number of incorporated commercial banks in the United States grew from 88 in 1815 to 1,562 in 1860, and their aggregate note issue from $45,500,000 to $207,000,000 over the same period. This very appreciable expansion is shown in the accompanying table; from 1834 statistics for bank deposits are added. Beginning with 1834 the statistics, while far from perfect, are more reliable than those indicated for earlier years, which are merely Gallatin's estimates.
