ABSTRACT
The Middle East is a unique region that has often been rightly compared to a mosaic of cultures and peoples, languages and religions. Indeed, this is true and, equally important, while these forces have often cross-fertilized, the region has definitely not been a melting pot or mixing bowl. Cultural and ethnic boundaries have remainedlargely intact.
