Calomel was a mercury-based medicine favored by both Union and Confederate doctors during the Civil War. It came in two main forms. “Blue pills” contained a mixture of mercury with licorice, rose water, powdered rose, honey, and sugar. The other, “blue mass,” was a lump of mercurous chloride from which dispensing doctors pinched off a piece. In neither case were the doses standardized or measured.
