ABSTRACT
Historians invariably involve themselves in the business of oversimplification. They work with only a partial record of the past, which means that they can never know an awful lot about what happened. Even when they know a great deal, they must condense what they know into communicable form, that is, a book or article, which at best summarizes what they consider to be the most important aspects of their knowledge.
