ABSTRACT

Dani sh C ar toon Cr i si s In September 2005, the Danish daily JyllandsPosten ran twelve cartoons that satirically depicted the Prophet Muhammad, offending many Muslims throughout the world. The Danish response was to assert that the cartoons were printed in the name of freedom of speech and not to proffer an apology for any offense. This engendered great anger among Muslims from Gaza to Jakarta who responded with demonstrations, death threats, and attacks on Danish embassies in Damascus, Beirut, and Tehran.
