ABSTRACT
The Russian Far East (RFE) stretches from Arctic seas in the north to the Chinese border in the south, and from the Pacific Ocean in the east to Siberia in the west. Thus defined, the total territory amounts to 6.2 million square kilometers, a full 42 percent of the Russian Federation. The RFE can be broken down into many administrative divisions, but economically the most important distinction is between north and south.
