ABSTRACT

Women who fill this volume have surmounted barriers and excelled in the field of public administration. Some are honored for their cutting-edge re search. Still others such as Láveme Burchfield were talented women who cared more about getting the job done than who got the credit. Only after their deaths do readers leam of their contributions. The men around them enjoyed the titles, prestige, and glory that these women made possible. Other women included here did not shun the limelight, but seized leadership roles in departments and agencies of government, in their professional associa tions, and in academia.
