ABSTRACT
The Academy of Management research was carried out to provide data that would serve as a basis for my presidential address to that organization in 1978. These results represent an expanded version of that presentation. They were published in the Academy of Management Journal (Miner 1980a), although at the time such publication was not an automatic accoutrement of the presidential office in the Academy. In actual fact the manuscript was quite heavily reviewed and came very close to not appearing in the Journal.
