ABSTRACT

From her fine family background, Mother Meng was well versed in traditional etiquette and knew well the Confucian vir tues of womanhood. She has historically been viewed as the epitome of the mother model in China. Her attention to prenatal education has proved significant, as have her instructions for cultivating neighbors, keeping promises, maintaining one’s con victions, and molding a child’s character. Chinese history credits Mother Meng with inspiring Mencius’s virtues, which enabled him to become a scholar on a par with Confucius.
