ABSTRACT

Chunyu Yi had an interest in medicine and studied how to make medical prescriptions while a youth. In 180 B.C. he began studying medicine under Yang Qing, a well-known physician, and later under Doctor Gongsun Guang, from whom he learned to diagnose and treat diseases. He was given copies of books related to pulse reading by Leaders Huangdi and Bian Que and learned to make diagnoses by observing the patient and mea suring the pulse. Chunyu Yi began to practice medicine, com piling Medical Archives, the first book of medical cases in Chi nese history, in which he described his treatments in detail. His book played an important role during the formative period of Chinese medicine. He developed his skills rapidly, achieving fame for treating those assumed to be incurable. He traveled far and wide to serve patients, and more and more individuals sought his treatment. Perhaps because of his rapid rise to fame,

he began to take on pretentious airs, alienating many families that he now refused to treat.
