ABSTRACT

Madam Lu (ca. 20 b .c .-17 a .d .) was an aristocratic leader of a peasant uprising against the usurper Wang Mang, who ruled from 8 to 23 a .d . (see Wang Zhengjun). The first female leader of a peasant uprising in China, she was a native of Langxiehaiqu (now Rizhao in Shandong province) and came from a wealthy family.
