ABSTRACT

Su Hui (ca. 380-440 a .d .) was a poet who became well known around the year 400 a .d . The daughter of a county official, she was a native of Wugong county, Shaanxi province. At the time she was bom, competing powers arose in northern and southern China. Later the Early Qin regime was set up and extended firm control over the vast northern areas. A period of prosperity and economic boom followed the new regime’s adoption of policies such as encouraging agriculture and allowing the growth of Con­ fucianism. Su Hui grew up during this stable and flourishing period.
