ABSTRACT

Princess Taiping (d. 713 a . d . ) was the youngest daughter of Emperor Gaozong of the Tang dynasty and Empress Wu Zetian (see Wu Zetian). How she came to be named Taiping, which means peace, is an interesting story. Before the princess’s first marriage, the king of Tibet sought a marriage alliance with the Tang dynasty, but Emperor Gaozong and Empress Wu did not agree. Instead, to show that she was needed at home, they built a temple called Taiping and made the princess its head, thus she was called Princess Taiping.
