ABSTRACT

After reading this poem, the emperor felt saddened and ordered the court musician to compose a musical score to the poem called “ One Hu of Pearls.”

During the rebellion of An Shi in 755 a .d ., Jiang Chaipin died. The emperor was not aware of this and had officials look for her everywhere. Later, Li Shi presented a picture of Jiang Chaipin to Emperor Xuanzong, who thereupon wrote a poem on the picture in mourning. Of all the poems of Jiang Chaipin, only “ Thanks for Bestowing Pearls” and “ Eastern Flower” survive. Her other poems-such as “ Bamboo Flute,” “ Orchid,” “ Pearl Garden,” “ Plum Blossom,” “ Phoenix Flute,” “ Glass Circle,” “ Scissors,” and “ Leaning Against Window” —all have been lost.
