ABSTRACT

The following thema seemed both psychologically basic and politically relevant: (1) "Display" refers to the actor's way of organizing his life into public and private realms, to his mode of self-expression and repression. (2) "Contact" refers to his way of mediating self-other relationships, including his style of organization and leadership. (3) "Interest" refers to his conception of such material inducements as status, wealth, and power. (4) "Reality" refers to the actor's primitive ontology: what is "real" in life, and how does man relate to reality? (5) "Evaluation" refers to the actor's moral classification of reality. (6) "Work" refers to his mode of interacting with his usable environment, to how he does his "job." In the conclusion, we attempt to show how character was translated into policy within a stable authority structure and how changes in role and milieu ultimately brought the two characters into a conflict involving the entire political system.
