ABSTRACT
Criticism and self-criticism, or inner-Party struggle as it is sometimes called, has always been a major mechanism of inner-Party decision making and discipline among Chinese Communist elites, but during the GPCR it emerged as a fonn of mass mobilization and rectification as weIl. This chapter interprets this climactic development as the consequence of aseries of contingent political decisions and cumulative structural changes in the Chinese communications system.
