ABSTRACT

I do not intend to impose on the reader even a fraction of the masses of statistics in the Human Develop ment Report that prove the contention of the previous paragraph in the most exhaustive manner imaginable. I would not even know how to go about such an enterprise without du plicating the entire book. But there are a few primal facts that should be of interest to every literate person and that strain comprehension even after they have been memorized and impressed indelibly on the brain.
