His successor was more attuned to layoffs, outsourcing, and mov ing south. Even he tried to save a plant in New Britain that made retractable measuring tapes by automating the assembly line. But it broke down too often, so basically the plan failed. He didn’t lay off, outsource, and move fast enough, so the board hired a third CEO who got the job done, and when it was done the plant in New Britain was empty except for the headquarters staff.
