ABSTRACT

Over several decades, substantial economic growth has failed to improve the standard of living for those near the bottom of the income distribution. In addition, economic growth has failed to generate policies that provide aid to families with children. Since the 1970s, child poverty rates in the United States have consistently been much higher than the poverty rates for other age groups. Child poverty in the United States has also been much higher than child poverty in other developed countries. In this regard, the United States remains far behind the rest of the world. Our focus here will be on one policy that can do much to help such families and especially their children-paid parental leave.
