ABSTRACT

W hen a youth under the influence of an adm ired leader adopts some belief because o f the leader’s dom inance over him and not because of logical dem onstration of its tru th we see suggestion a t w ork ; and similarly, if the youth adopts some ideal suggested by the leader, say of tru th or justice. Clearly this process o f suggestion m ay be o f great im portance in the train ing of character, and even as regards the a ttitude to school studies; for example, the suggestion th a t a poem is beautiful, or a chemical experim ent wonderful, can lead the pupil to give them a sym pathetic trial. T hus the process o f suggestion is w orth careful study; and w ith it we can consider the psychology of im itation - a w ord best confined to the doing of an action seen carried out by another.
