ABSTRACT

Event studies is the academic field devoted to creating knowledge and theory about planned events; the scope of events spans individual celebrations and community festivals, sports, business meetings and exhibitions; it also includes mega events, which have largely become the realm of professionals, corporations and entrepreneurs. Within the study of events, an academic field of knowledge requires a unique core phenomenon as the principal focus for academic inquiry. It is the study of all planned events that is the main focus of this book within the field that is known broadly as ‘event studies’. As a recent area of growth, event studies encompasses the planning and management, outcomes, experience of events and meanings attached to them, and all the dynamic processes shaping events and the reasons why people attend them.
