ABSTRACT

There are a number of closely related professional fields that involve, contribute to and can benefit from event studies. Although professionals in these fields might not call themselves ‘event managers’, the coordination, production or marketing of events is sometimes an important part of their work. Leisure studies is the most advanced in terms of developing its own interdisciplinary theory, and possibly has the most to contribute to event studies. Similarly, tourism and hospitality are also very closely related, especially because of the importance of planned events as ‘products’ or ‘attractions’ and in view of the consumption of events in the leisure time of tourists. This chapter also reviews some new and emerging fields of relevance, including visitor studies, in which events are one part of their scope.
