ABSTRACT

In this book my goal has been to understand how health is currently conceptualised, researched and intervened into. Grasping this topic requires an examination of a number of distinct areas, namely: epidemiology, evidence-based medicine and ethics (the three Es, if you will). But this isn’t just a matter of epidemiology and evidence-based medicine shaping our ‘facts’ and ethics shaping our ‘values’. As Steven Shapin (2010: 47) observes, ‘Verity and virtue march in lock-step through history, as do error and evil.’
