ABSTRACT

The first line of Japan’s Shinkansen high-speed rail system, Tokyo to Osaka, opened in 1964. The fast and innovative service was an immediate success. Lines were extended to other parts of Japan in a series of projects implemented in the ensuing years. Now 50 years old, the Shinkansen system has carried over 11 billion passengers and in doing so it has helped to transform the Japanese economic landscape.
