ABSTRACT

Vasilij Aksenov is a prominent dissident writer, one of the 1960s idealists («шестидесятники»), who sought to break free of the lies and restrictions of Stalin’s rule during the thaw under Nikita Khrushchev. The writer had to leave Russia in 1980 for the United States, where he was successful both as a writer and as a university lecturer. Aksenov returned to Russia after Перестройка, where he died in 2008. His biography is given in V. Esipov’s «Четыре жизни Василия Аксенова» (Chapter 14).
