Specic deterrence and incapacitation are two prominent methods for preventing convicted oenders from committing further crimes. Both methods seek to prevent crime through intervention with individuals who have already harmed society and shown a disposition toward deviant activity. e prevention of crime through these approaches revolves around punishment of the oender. e form of punishment most considered in evaluations of specic deterrence and incapacitation is incarceration. Despite the similarity in the punishment, the actual process by which specic deterrence and incapacitation brings about crime prevention is very dierent.
