ABSTRACT

Imagine you and some friends are attending a trivia night at a local bar. In the final round, the host asks you to name the country with the highest imprisonment rate in the world. Naturally, your team starts brainstorming possible answer choices. China seems like a natural choice because they have the world’s largest population-over 1.35 billion people. How about India? They have the world’s second largest population. What about Russia? That is a big country too. You sneak a glance at the team sitting closest to you. You can’t tell exactly what they wrote, but it sure doesn’t look like Russia. Your team keeps at it, running through country after country: Brazil, Indonesia, Japan, Australia . . . Finally you all give up. Nobody knows the answer, and no one can agree on what country to guess. Instead of writing down an answer, your team draws a big question mark.
