ABSTRACT

Corpora have had an influence on ELT (particularly in EFL and ESL contexts) for a number of years and have been used to help inform syllabuses, learner dictionaries, reference grammars, self-study grammar practice books and textbooks. While this influence may seem obvious, it is worth pausing for a moment to consider, as we have done up to now, what a corpus might tell us about an aspect of grammar that our own intuitions may not.
