ABSTRACT

The title of our chapter points to a conundrum of power in organizations, which we disentangle via the opportunities afforded by theoretical cross-fertilization between business and the arts. In approaching power as structural (power manifested in structurally enabled individual action over others) and relational (power manifested in the circulation of actions), we emphasize the dynamic nature of this social phenomenon and its unavoidable dialectics that result in an inescapable conundrum-a story of power in organizations is simultaneously a story of disempowerment and the responsibility of taming, impeding or softening the destructive impulses of certain structures and individual tyranny.
