ABSTRACT
This chapter is based on a research project funded between 2005 and 2013 by FAPESP (São Paulo Research Foundation), which investigated theatre censorship in Brazil over four decades of authoritarian government, with a particular focus on words and expressions that were prohibited. The aim of the chapter is to provide an overview of theatre censorship in Brazil in relation to the changing political environment, to identify its main priorities and to assess its impact.
