ABSTRACT
Archiving is a term that originated in the field of data management. This essay discusses its adoption outside this original field to refer to a range of different activities: permanent preservation of archives, documentation of society and, most recently, the choice made by individuals and groups as to the selection of written information about them that should/might be preserved and made accessible. The methodologies involved in each of these activities are briefly outlined.
