ABSTRACT

RELATED SERVICES DETERMINATION IDEA requires schools to provide students with disabilities a free and appropriate education, as well as the needed supports, both academic and nonacademic, to most effectively serve these students. These needed supports are referred to as related services. These supports could include speech and language services for a student who has difficulties articulating specific sounds, occupational therapy for a student with difficulties holding a pencil, counseling for a student or family in crisis, or for any number of other services or supports a student needs in order to obtain an appropriate education (“Related Services”, 2010). IDEA (Sec. 300.34) defines related services as:

transportation and such developmental, corrective, and other supportive services as are required to assist a child with a disability to benefit from special education, and includes speech-language pathology and audiology services, interpreting services, psychological services, physical and occupational therapy, recreation, including therapeutic recreation, early identification and assessment of disabilities in children, counseling services, including rehabilitation counseling, orientation and mobility services, and medical services for diagnostic or evaluation purposes.
