ABSTRACT

There are three aspects that I want to illustrate in this chapter. Firstly, my own experience both as a mother and a daughter; secondly, illustrations and examples from my clinical work as both a music therapist and a psychotherapist; and, thirdly, theoretical thinking and considerations. Much of what I am going to say has been greatly enriched by talking to Rosalind Mayo over the years, as we travelled home from Philadelphia Association meetings on the Cambridge train. I thank Ros for very stimulating discussions, which often seemed to be drawn towards thinking about the maternal.
