ABSTRACT

There is always a third in psychoanalysis. In this paper I am going to discuss a third in psychoanalytic theory. This is the third model of contemporary psychoanalytic field theory. Two psychoanalytic models, one based on the work of Madeleine and Willy Baranger and the other on the work on Antonino Ferro, are well recognized as field theories. The substantial differences between these two models are not widely understood. This leads some to think of “psychoanalytic field theory” as one model. As I will subsequently note, these two field theory models are distinct and have unique developmental histories.
