ABSTRACT

In his paper on beginning the treatment, Freud (1913) uses the analogy of a train journey, comparing the patient to a passenger sitting in a carriage and the analyst to a railway expert. Associating freely, the patient-aspassenger describes his2 states of mind, thoughts and emotions as if they were the changing scenes he sees through the window. however, he is unaware of the meaning of what he is describing – and still less of that of the entire sequence of his associative descriptions. Both meanings are unconscious and can be brought to light only through the analyst’s work of decoding and interpretation.
