ABSTRACT

Socialcogmtivetheorydistinguishesbetweentwobroadclassesof motivation(Bandura,1986).Oneclassofmotivatorsisbiologicallybased andincludesphysiologicalconditionsarisingfromcellulardeficitsand externalaversiveeventsthatactivatebehaviorthroughtheirphysically painfuleffects.Thesecondmajorsourceofmotivatorsiscognitively based.Incognitively-generatedmotivation,peoplemotivatethemselves andguidetheiractionsanticipatorilythroughtheexerciseofforethought.Theyanticipatelikelyoutcomesofprospectiveactions,theyset goalsforthemselves,andtheyplancoursesofactiondesignedtorealize valuedfutures.
