ABSTRACT
This chapter will sketch those aspects of psychiatry, particularly its core model and social function, which conflict with the assumptions and aspirations of psychological practice in the NHS. Additionally, the specific institutional politics of the two professions will be scrutinised, with particular reference to the practice of psychotherapy by non-medical personnel, in a work setting dominated by the medical model.
