ABSTRACT

Context for this book Green belts surround most of the major urban areas in the United Kingdom and play a major role in the planning and development of those towns and cities. They are important both in terms of the physical limits they place on urban expansion and as part of the “spatial imaginary” of town and country planning – the green belt has become shorthand for the broader mission of protecting the countryside of the UK, particularly in England. But how much do we really know about green belts in (at the time of writing) the second decade of the twenty-first century?
