ABSTRACT
Considerable debate has been generated over whether same-sex couples should be granted the
opportunity to marry legally. For some, a marriage, by definition, is between a man and a
woman, whereas others believe a marriage can exist between same-sex partners. The argument
over whether same-sex marriage enriches or detracts from the sanctity of marriage and family
is a contentious issue on media and policy agendas in the United States.
