ABSTRACT

The EU’s legal framework establishes different citizenship statuses depending on nationality and the duration of residence. As a common status of all EU member state nationals, EU law introduced Union citizenship. Union citizenship, thus, has legally defined a community of ‘Europeans’, who share the same status irrespective of their nationality. It has reclassified migrants in

with TCNs’ satisfaction. The problems and prospects of demoi-cracy in Europe in light of these findings are discussed in the concluding section.
